DUNE

House Atreides has been granted control over Arrakis; a desert planet of much importance due to it being the main source of spice, which is used by the navigators to see paths thought time and space and avoid collision with planets and other starships. But what seems to be a gift is in fact a treacherous plot between the noble houses. A plan to maintain the Emperor’s power has been set in motion, putting house versus house, one of which is a threat to his throne. But even the great noble houses do not know everything, for there is another plan in motion.

The story, although based in a science fiction world, is more of a socio-political thriller with supernatural and religious themes. For the first book I would say the main theme is treason. Be ready to see character misunderstand information, act recklessly and other times being too careful for their own good. Wait as they slowly come to terms with the inevitable and fall deeper into desperation, fooling themselves into thinking they have won, or lost. After that it’s all about survival, adaptation, and coming to terms with who they truly are. They must discover the path laid for them and decide whether or not they should take it.

Frank Herbert did an amazing job developing his characters. You truly get to know these people as if you have lived with them. The expression of thought processes and internal dialogue is exquisite. That is what I liked the most, the characters. One thing I will want to clarify, the characters are not as soft and friendly as the new 2021 movie makes them seem. These characters are harsh, mean, and driven to perform their roles in society. Also, the story can be cloying sometimes. It can drag and bit and take too long to get to the point, which tempted me in several locations to skip paragraphs and I had to stay focus and go back. So, if you decide to read this, be patient, it’s worth it.
